Introducing Nishan
Scientific discovery has never been limited by curiosity. More often, it has been limited by access.
Every year, thousands of students develop research ideas that never reach a lab, a mentor, or a publication. This isn't because the ideas lack merit. It's because the infrastructure connecting talented students to research opportunities doesn't exist at the scale the problem requires. Opportunities are scattered across institutions. Mentorship depends on existing networks. Collaboration depends more on geography than on ability.
Over the past eighteen months, we've been building Nishan to address this.
Below, we describe what Nishan is, how it works, what we've learned building it, and what we're doing next.
Background
Nishan is a research institute focused on expanding access to scientific research through technology, mentorship, and collaboration. Our objective is straightforward: create an environment where ambitious students can move beyond learning about science and begin contributing to it.
We started from a specific observation. Students capable of producing meaningful research often can't find environments where they're able to do so. Solving that required more than another directory of internships and independent-project templates. It required infrastructure supporting every stage of the research process — from discovering opportunities and forming teams, to mentorship, collaboration, publication, and continued academic development.
Today's launch is the first public step in that direction.
How research matching works: Fingerprint
Most existing systems for connecting students to research rely on broad subject categories, manual search, or personal connections. These approaches can surface opportunities, but they routinely skip a more important question: who is actually best suited to work together?
We built Fingerprint, our research matching framework, to answer that question directly.
Fingerprint is a computational representation of research readiness and compatibility. Instead of matching people through keywords or stated interests alone, it evaluates a broader set of signals: technical competencies, methodological experience, research interests, computational skills, academic background, scientific writing experience, prior projects, and demonstrated areas of curiosity. These form multidimensional representations we use to evaluate compatibility between students, mentors, and research opportunities.
The goal is not to identify applicants who clear a minimum bar. It's to identify combinations of people whose experience and interests complement one another — research teams built for sustained collaboration, not short-term placement.
Fingerprint will keep changing as the community using it grows, incorporating new forms of scientific experience and refining how teams get assembled.
Mentorship
Research is rarely learned from lectures. It develops through conversation, feedback, revision, and sustained work alongside people who've done it before.
Nishan connects students with mentors from leading universities — including T20 undergraduate institutions — and PhD researchers across a range of scientific disciplines. Mentors don't just review manuscripts or answer technical questions. They work alongside students on literature review, experimental design, computational methods, statistical analysis, scientific communication, and publication.
We think mentorship at this level of engagement is one of the more reliable ways to lower the barrier to research without lowering the bar for it.
Workspaces
Every accepted project on Nishan runs inside a collaborative research workspace built specifically for scientific teams.
Each workspace is the central environment for a project: students, mentors, resources, literature, discussion, milestones, and progress, all in one place, rather than split across disconnected tools. Students exchange ideas, review drafts, organize literature, coordinate experiments, and get feedback through every stage of the work, inside the same environment where the work is happening.
Publishing
One of Nishan's central goals is creating more paths for students to contribute to the scientific literature.
Research conducted through the institute is eligible for publication through Nishan, giving students a structured route to communicate original work. We're currently working toward DOI registration for published articles, along with an ISSN for our publications — steps intended to make that work permanent, discoverable, and citable over the long term.
Publication isn't an end state. It's the start of a conversation the work then has to hold up in. We want what comes out of Nishan to be good enough to be part of that conversation, and we want more students participating in it.
What's ahead
There is significant work still in front of us, and it's worth being specific about where the gaps are rather than glossing over them.
Fingerprint gets more useful as more people use it — which means it is least useful right now, at launch, when we have the fewest data points to draw on. Our mentor network is real but not yet as broad as we want across every discipline a student might want to pursue. Our publication infrastructure, including the DOI and ISSN work, is in progress, not complete.
In the coming months, we'll expand the mentorship network, add research programs in new scientific disciplines, and continue refining Fingerprint as more researchers join the platform. We'll also start releasing educational resources aimed at making advanced scientific training accessible regardless of institution or geography, along with institute-led courses and research seminars connecting students, mentors, and researchers around emerging areas of science.
We think launching now, with those gaps visible, is better than waiting until they're closed. Talented students exist everywhere. Opportunity doesn't. Closing that gap is the premise Nishan is built on, and closing it happens by building in public and improving from here — not by waiting for a finished product before showing anyone.
This launch is the beginning of that effort. We look forward to building the next chapter with the students and mentors who join us.
