Submit your
manuscript
These sections detail the information required at submission for the initial editorial evaluation of your manuscript. Formatting requirements listed in the Author Guidelines do not need to be met for the initial submission.
What to prepare
Manuscript
For initial submissions, your manuscript does not need to follow a specific format. We do ask that you include the following:
- Title
- Author list, author affiliations and footnotes, and contact information
- A summary or abstract
- Sufficient experimental and methodological information for us to interpret the results in context
Please note that submissions must be written in English.
Cover letter
The cover letter is only available to the editors and will not be seen by reviewers. The cover letter should explain:
- What was previously known (the background)
- The conceptual advance provided by your work
- The significance of the work and its potential impact
- Whether your paper is part of a collaboration or consortium
You may also use the cover letter to:
- Suggest appropriate reviewers and request reviewer exclusions
- Share information about related work, time constraints, and/or competing submissions
- Note if you have already communicated about the paper with one of the Journal's editors
Other files
A completed declaration of interests statement is required for every submission. Additional items may also be required; the submission portal lists everything needed before your manuscript can be sent for review.
How to submit
Using the submission portal
For initial submission, you can upload your manuscript either as a PDF (containing the text and all related material) or as a Word file (with related material uploaded as separate files). If your manuscript was prepared with LaTeX, you must upload a PDF version for readability.
Although PDFs are acceptable — and, for LaTeX manuscripts, required — at initial submission, if your paper is accepted, your final materials must be in an editable format, preferably Microsoft Word.
For initial submission, please keep figures and other files small (1–2 MB) so that editors and reviewers can more easily work with them. Your initial submission materials should be no larger than 20 MB in total. If your article is accepted for publication, we will request higher-quality figure files for production if necessary.
Additional information
When you submit your manuscript, you will be asked to provide the name and email address of an alternate contact. You might also be asked for additional information about the work. Your answers at this stage are not binding, are not shown to editors or reviewers, and do not influence the editorial process.
The portal builds a single composite PDF of the submitted files for editors and reviewers. The version shared with reviewers does not include the cover letter or any reviewer preferences.
When the submission process is complete, you will receive an email confirmation that includes your manuscript ID number. Please keep this information for future correspondence. All communication is sent to the email address associated with the account used to submit the manuscript. If you want to specify a different author for correspondence, please contact the editorial office.
